Professor John Ruggie, the United Nations Special Representative on Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises, recently released the draft “Guiding Principles for the Implementation of the UN ‘Protect, Respect and Remedy’ Framework” on his online forum. The Guiding Principles are the evolution of Ruggie’s work in elaborating the interconnections between business and human rights, including the role of States in ensuring protection of human rights. Although Right Respect has joined other civil society organizations in stressing the need for an international legal instrument to ensure ultimate protection of human rights by businesses, the draft does successfully lay out principles that can guide corporations and states in bettering their human rights performance. A more detailed analysis will be formally submitted to the Special Representative and posted here.
